Wat leert mijn kind op het mbo?.
An mbo education has different parts. Which subjects does your child get? What is required and what can your child choose? Below we show what your child learns and what choices there are.
Structure of the mbo education
Students move from mbo education to a job or a hbo education. To prepare your child well, an mbo education has three parts: a basic part, a profile part and a choice part. Below we list them for you.
Basic part – general subjects
The education starts with the basic part. The government decides the rules for these subjects. The basic part has general subjects Dutch language, maths, career and citizenship. Students at level 4 also take English.
Basic part – job specific subjects
Besides general subjects, the basic part also has job specific subjects. These are about the general knowledge, skills and attitude the student must have. The basic part is about half of the education. These practical subjects are important to prepare your child to work in a job.
Profile part
Besides the basic part there is a profile part. In the profile part your child chooses a direction and specialises in that field of work. The name of the profile is on the diploma (example: ICT manager). The profile part is about one third of the education. The basic and profile parts together form the qualification of the student. The basic and profile parts are fixed parts of the education.
Choice part
The last part of an mbo education is the choice part. In this part the student chooses subjects to widen or deepen knowledge. For example to make moving on in mbo or to hbo easier. Or to increase chances in the job market. Mbo schools decide which choice subjects they offer.
