Types and levels of secondary vocational education courses.

The secondary vocational education offers a wide range of courses at different levels. How do you know which type and level of course is suitable for your child? We give an overview below to make the choice easier.

Which level?

First, it is important that your child knows which level to start at. The previous education determines that. In secondary vocational education, there are four different levels with the following admission requirements:

  • Level 1 entry course: one-year course for anyone aged 16 or older without a diploma.
  • Level 2 basic vocational course: one to two-year course for students with at least a vmbo-basic diploma or secondary vocational education level 1, or a promotion certificate from three to four havo or vwo.
  • Level 3 professional course: two to three-year course for students with at least a vmbo-kader diploma or secondary vocational education level 2, or a promotion certificate from three to four havo or vwo.
  • Level 4 middle management course: for students with at least a vmbo-kader diploma or secondary vocational education level 2, or a promotion certificate from three to four havo or vwo.
  • Level 4 specialist course: one-year course for students who want to continue learning the same profession after obtaining secondary vocational education level 3 diploma.

Students without a diploma can also choose to take an admission test for a secondary vocational education course at level 2, 3, or 4.

BOL and BBL

Within secondary vocational education, there are not only different levels but also different types of courses: BOL and BBL. In a vocational training pathway (BOL), your child spends most hours at school. They also gain practical experience through internships. In the vocational work pathway (BBL), students work four days a week and go to school one day a week. It is important to find out if your child likes studying at school or prefers to do practical work as much as possible.

Recognized secondary vocational education courses

Does your child have a course in mind? Always check if it is recognized. You can do this in the Crebo register. Go to the DUO website. There you will also find the official name of the course. This makes it easier to compare the same course at different secondary vocational education schools.
