What does the municipality do for education?.
As a parent, you may hear little about it, but your municipality plays a role in your child's education. Your municipality makes decisions on some points or has executive tasks. We explain what your municipality does around education.
Pre and early childhood education
The municipality must ensure there are enough places for pre and early childhood education. This is extra help for young children (2.5–4 years) who are at risk of language delay. The municipality decides who can join within national rules and arranges access for parents to these places.
Policy on educational disadvantage
Municipalities have an important task in preventing and reducing educational disadvantages. They get funds from the national government to make plans with schools to support young children at risk of falling behind. They also look at local conditions so children get as many chances as possible.
Compulsory education
Every municipality has at least one official for compulsory education. This person checks that children from age 5 go to school and that young people up to 18 years or until getting a basic qualification follow education. The municipality can contact parents, help think of solutions, and sometimes act when there is much unauthorized absence.
Student transport
If your child cannot travel to school independently (for example, because extra help is needed or the nearest school is too far), the municipality arranges student transport. This can be in different ways: a public transport pass, arranged transport with a bus or taxi, or a travel allowance. You can ask the municipality how it works and if you qualify for a travel allowance.
Public education
Although schools are responsible for their education, the municipality ensures there are enough public schools. If there are not enough public schools nearby, the municipality makes sure children get public education another way. For example, by arranging transport to a public school.
The school building
The municipality makes a plan with the school governing bodies for renovation and new school buildings. The plan shows what has priority. The buildings must meet legal demands like safety, accessibility, good air quality, and enough space.
Sitting at home
Sometimes a child cannot (or no longer can) go to school. This is called sitting at home. The municipality has an important role here, together with the school, compulsory education official, and the partnership tailored education. The goal is always to find tailored education or an alternative as soon as possible. The municipality can help organize custom solutions and break deadlocks.
Youth help
If your child needs extra support, for example because of behavior problems, mental health, or a difficult home situation, youth help is the place to go. The municipality is responsible for this help and works with schools. In practice, this can overlap, which can be confusing for parents. The municipality can help with starting and coordinating youth help so school and care connect better.
